Walter Isaacson – Author Biography

Walter Isaacson is America’s preeminent biographer of genius — the author of bestselling lives of Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin, and Elon Musk. A former editor of Time and chairman of CNN, he has made the biography of innovators his life’s work.

Early Life

Isaacson was born on May 20, 1952, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He studied history and literature at Harvard University, graduating summa cum laude in 1974, and then attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, earning a master’s degree in philosophy, politics, and economics.

Career

Isaacson began in journalism at London’s Sunday Times and then spent two decades at Time magazine, rising to become its editor in 1996. In 2001 he became chairman and CEO of CNN, and later president of the Aspen Institute. His biography career began with Kissinger (1992) and Benjamin Franklin: An American Life (2003), but Einstein: His Life and Universe (2007) made him a bestselling biographer. Then came the book that defined him: Steve Jobs (2011), written with the cooperation of Jobs himself, published weeks after Jobs’s death — it sold millions and became one of the bestselling biographies ever. The Innovators (2014) told the history of the digital revolution; Leonardo da Vinci (2017) explored the artist-scientist; The Code Breaker (2021) profiled CRISPR pioneer Jennifer Doudna; and Elon Musk (2023), written with Musk’s cooperation over two years of shadowing, became another #1 bestseller.

Major Works

Steve Jobs (2011) remains the definitive life of the Apple co-founder. Einstein (2007) and Leonardo da Vinci (2017) explore creativity across centuries. Benjamin Franklin (2003) reclaimed Franklin as America’s original innovator. Elon Musk (2023) is his sprawling, controversial portrait of the world’s richest man, and The Code Breaker (2021) brought the CRISPR revolution to general readers.

Writing Style and Themes

Isaacson writes big, narrative-driven, deeply reported biographies — hundreds of interviews, exhaustive archives — in lucid, propulsive prose aimed at the general reader. His great theme is the intersection of creativity and character: how imagination, obsession, and often difficult personalities produce world-changing innovation. He is fascinated by polymaths and boundary-crossers — Franklin, da Vinci, Einstein, Jobs — and by the interplay of art and science, individual genius and collaborative teams.

Legacy

Isaacson has essentially created the modern template for the “genius biography” as blockbuster nonfiction. His books have sold tens of millions of copies, been adapted for film and television, and shaped public understanding of figures from Einstein to Musk. As a journalist, executive, and institution-builder, he has also been a central figure in American media and civic life for four decades.
