Travis Baldree – Author Biography

Early Life

Travis Baldree was born in 1977 in Nacogdoches, Texas, and grew up in Eden, Texas, before his family moved to Colfax, Washington. He later recalled that he always wanted to grow up to be a writer. He attended Washington State University before leaving to work as a software engineer — a detour that would last decades.

Career

Baldree spent the first act of his career designing video games, co-founding Runic Games and Double Damage Games and creating hits like Fate, Torchlight (2009), and Rebel Galaxy. In his forties he pivoted to full-time audiobook narration, becoming one of the most in-demand voices in fantasy — he narrated all twelve books of Will Wight’s Cradle series, several of them New York Times audio bestsellers. During the pandemic, he wrote a novel in 26 days for NaNoWriMo: Legends & Lattes, self-published in 2022. It became a phenomenon, won the Astounding Award for Best New Writer, and was picked up by Tor Books.

Major Works

Legends & Lattes (2022) — a “cozy fantasy” about a retired barbarian opening a coffee shop — and its prequel Bookshops & Bonedust (2023), about the same heroine’s youth working in a bookshop. As a game designer, his credits include Torchlight, Fate, and Rebel Galaxy; as a narrator, hundreds of audiobooks.

Writing Style and Themes

Baldree writes cozy fantasy: high fantasy with low stakes, where the drama is a broken espresso machine rather than a dark lord. His prose is warm, funny, and humane, full of found family and small kindnesses. His theme is retirement and reinvention — what happens after the adventure ends, when a warrior wants a quiet life. He has said the books were inspired by a craving for escapism during the pandemic, in the spirit of The Great British Bake Off.

Legacy

Baldree is credited with launching the cozy fantasy boom, one of the defining publishing trends of the 2020s. Legends & Lattes proved that gentle, low-conflict fantasy could be a commercial juggernaut, opening the door for a wave of imitators. His triple career — games, narration, novels — makes him one of the most versatile storytellers working today.
