Mariana Zapata – Author Biography
Early Life
Mariana Zapata was born and raised in Texas and began her writing life as a fanfiction author. She has described growing up immersed in romance novels and deciding she wanted to write the kind of slow-developing love stories she most loved to read.
Career
Zapata built a self-publishing mini-empire before signing with a traditional publisher, releasing more than a dozen novels that earned her New York Times and USA Today bestseller status. Her breakout hit, The Wall of Winnipeg and Me (2016) — a romance between a football star and his long-suffering assistant — cemented her reputation, while From Lukov with Love (2018), a figure-skating romance, became a TikTok sensation. In 2023 she joined Avon Books, with re-releases introducing her backlist to a still wider audience.
Major Works
The Wall of Winnipeg and Me (2016) and From Lukov with Love (2018) are her signature titles, alongside Kulti, Wait for It, All Rhodes Lead Here, and Luna and the Lie.
Writing Style and Themes
Zapata is known as the “queen of the slow burn”: long, banter-filled novels in which attraction builds gradually through everyday friction and reluctant proximity. Her style is warm, funny, and dialogue-driven, with grumpy heroes, capable heroines, and satisfying emotional payoffs. Her recurring themes are patience in love, personal growth alongside romance, and the delicious tension of enemies-to-lovers done slowly.
Legacy
Zapata is a five-time Goodreads Choice Award nominee whose novels have been published in many languages. She proved that self-published romance could command a massive, devoted readership, and her TikTok-fuelled resurgence made her one of the defining romance authors of the 2020s.
