Gene Kim – Author Biography

Early Life

Gene Kim is a researcher, author, and entrepreneur who became one of the leading voices of the DevOps movement. With a background in computer science, he spent his early career studying how high-performing technology organizations work — what separates teams that ship software quickly and reliably from those that don’t.

Career

Kim co-authored The Phoenix Project: A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win (2013), with Kevin Behr and George Spafford. Written as a business novel in the tradition of The Goal, it follows an IT manager fighting to save his company — and became the book that introduced DevOps principles to mainstream business readers, selling hundreds of thousands of copies. He followed it with The DevOps Handbook (2016), co-written with Jez Humble, Patrick Debois, and John Willis, the movement’s practical manual; The Unicorn Project (2019), a companion novel told from the developer’s perspective; and Wiring the Winning Organization (2024), with Steven Spear, on organizational design. He founded the DevOps Enterprise Summit conference and the research firm Accelerate, and his “State of DevOps” research has shaped how the industry measures performance.

Major Works

The Phoenix Project (2013) is his landmark — the novel that made DevOps a boardroom topic. The Unicorn Project (2019) retold the story from the developer’s side. The DevOps Handbook (2016) and Wiring the Winning Organization (2024) are his key nonfiction works.

Writing Style and Themes

Kim writes in two modes: the business novel, where management theory comes alive through story, and the research-driven handbook. His great themes are flow (how work moves through systems), feedback, and continuous learning — the “Three Ways” of DevOps. His central insight is that IT is not a cost center but the engine of business value, and that the same principles that make factories efficient apply to software.

Legacy

Kim is widely regarded as one of the founding figures of the DevOps movement. The Phoenix Project is the rare business book that became genuine required reading across an industry, credited with helping thousands of organizations transform how they build software. His research continues to define how technology performance is measured.
