Becky Albertalli – Author Biography

Early Life

Becky Albertalli was born on 17 November 1982 in Atlanta, Georgia. She studied psychology at Wesleyan University and earned a doctorate in clinical psychology, working for years as a psychologist specialising in children and adolescents — experience that gave her young-adult fiction its authentic emotional texture.

Career

Albertalli’s debut novel, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (2015) — about a closeted gay teenager whose emails are used to blackmail him — won the William C. Morris Award for best YA debut and became a bestseller. Its film adaptation, Love, Simon (2018), was a landmark as a major-studio gay teen romance. She expanded the “Simonverse” with The Upside of Unrequited (2017) and Leah on the Offbeat (2018), and has written additional YA novels including What If It’s Us (2018, with Adam Silvera).

Major Works

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (2015) and Leah on the Offbeat (2018) anchor her bibliography, alongside The Upside of Unrequited (2017).

Writing Style and Themes

Albertalli writes warm, funny, big-hearted YA in the voice of contemporary teenagers — group chats, fandoms, and all. Her recurring themes are coming out and coming of age, the messiness of first love, friendship as family, and the right of queer teens to joyful, ordinary happy endings.

Legacy

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and its film adaptation were watershed moments for LGBTQ representation in mainstream teen culture, helping normalise queer love stories in commercial publishing and Hollywood.
