Al Ries – Author Biography

Early Life

Al Ries was born in 1926 in the United States. He studied at DePauw University and began his career in advertising in the 1950s, working his way up through agencies before founding his own firm, Ries & Ries, with his daughter Laura Ries.

Career

Ries’s career pivoted from practitioner to theorist in the late 1960s, when he and Jack Trout began publishing a series of articles in Advertising Age that introduced “positioning” — the idea that marketing is not a battle of products but a battle of perceptions in the customer’s mind. The articles became Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind (1981), one of the most influential marketing books ever written. He followed with Marketing Warfare (1986), Bottom-Up Marketing (1989), The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing (1993, with Laura Ries), and The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding (1998). He died on October 7, 2022, at 95.

Major Works

Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind (1981), Marketing Warfare (1986), The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing (1993), Focus (1996), The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding (1998).

Writing Style and Themes

Ries wrote in crisp, aphoristic business prose — laws, rules, and military metaphors. His core insight: in an over-communicated society, the only way to win is to own a word in the prospect’s mind (Volvo owns “safety,” BMW owns “driving”). His themes include focus over line extension, the power of being first in a category, and the folly of trying to be everything to everyone. His writing is contrarian and quotable, designed to give executives simple, memorable rules.

Legacy

Ries and Trout’s Positioning is routinely named among the greatest marketing books of all time — Advertising Age listed it among the top marketing books ever. The concept of positioning is now foundational vocabulary in business schools and boardrooms worldwide.
