Sonja Lyubomirsky – Author Biography

Early Life

Sonja Lyubomirsky was born in Russia and emigrated to the United States as a child. She earned her B.A. from Harvard University and her Ph.D. in social psychology from Stanford University in 1994. Her doctoral research on happiness and rumination launched her into one of the most productive careers in the young science of well-being.

Career

Lyubomirsky is Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Riverside, where she has spent her academic career. Her research focuses on the possibility of permanently increasing happiness — a contrarian position when she began, since psychologists long believed happiness was largely fixed by genetics and circumstance. Her famous “happiness pie chart” proposed that roughly 50% of happiness is genetic, 10% circumstantial, and 40% within our control through intentional activities. She brought this science to the public with The How of Happiness: A Scientific Approach to Getting the Life You Want (2007), a research-backed guide to twelve happiness-boosting practices, and The Myths of Happiness: What Should Make You Happy, but Doesn’t, What Shouldn’t Make You Happy, but Does (2013), which examined why life’s milestones so often disappoint.

Major Works

The How of Happiness (2007) and The Myths of Happiness (2013). She has authored over 130 scholarly articles on well-being.

Writing Style and Themes

Lyubomirsky writes as a scientist first: every claim is tied to experiments, and she is careful about what the evidence does and doesn’t support. Her core message is that happiness is a skill that can be practiced — through gratitude, savoring, kindness, and nurturing relationships — but that hedonic adaptation means we must vary our practices to keep them working. Her tone is measured and honest, warning against both toxic positivity and despair.

Legacy

Lyubomirsky is one of the founders of positive psychology and among the most cited happiness researchers in the world. The “40% within our control” finding reshaped how psychologists think about well-being, and her books remain the most scientifically grounded popular guides to happiness.
