Reid Hoffman – Author Biography
Early Life
Reid Garrett Hoffman was born on August 5, 1967, in Palo Alto, California, in the heart of what would become Silicon Valley. A childhood strategy-game enthusiast, he studied Symbolic Systems at Stanford University — an interdisciplinary mix of computer science, linguistics, and philosophy — and then won a Marshall Scholarship to study philosophy at Oxford University.
Career
Hoffman began his career at Apple and Fujitsu before joining PayPal as a founding board member and later chief operating officer, part of the legendary “PayPal Mafia.” In 2002 he co-founded LinkedIn, growing it into the world’s dominant professional network before its $26.2 billion acquisition by Microsoft in 2016. He became a partner at the venture capital firm Greylock, backing companies including Airbnb, and emerged as one of Silicon Valley’s most influential thinkers on entrepreneurship and networks.
Major Works
The Start-up of You (2012, with Ben Casnocha) applied Silicon Valley strategy to individual careers. The Alliance (2014, with Casnocha and Chris Yeh) proposed a new employer-employee compact for the networked age. Blitzscaling (2018, with Chris Yeh) codified the playbook for growing companies at lightning speed. He also created the hit podcast and book Masters of Scale, interviewing legendary founders about how they built their companies.
Writing Style and Themes
Hoffman writes practical, framework-driven business prose aimed at founders and operators. His central ideas: careers should be managed like startups (always in beta, building a network of allies), companies win by scaling faster than competitors dare, and networks — not lone geniuses — create value. His books are full of case studies from PayPal, LinkedIn, Airbnb, and Google, told with an insider’s candor about what actually worked and what nearly failed.
Legacy
Hoffman is one of the defining entrepreneurs of the internet era, and “blitzscaling” has entered the standard vocabulary of startups worldwide. His writings on networks, career strategy, and scale are taught in business schools and cited by founders globally. Beyond business, he has become a prominent voice on technology’s role in society, artificial intelligence, and the future of work.
