Robert Greene – Author Biography
Early Life
Robert Greene was born on 14 May 1959 in Los Angeles, California. He studied classical studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley. Before writing books, he worked a string of jobs — in construction, as a translator, a magazine editor, and a Hollywood screenwriter — experiences he later mined for his studies of power and human nature.
Career
Greene’s writing career began when he met book packager Joost Elffers, with whom he conceived The 48 Laws of Power (1998), a Machiavellian manual drawing on three thousand years of history. The book became a cult classic, famously embraced by the hip-hop community. He followed it with The Art of Seduction (2001), The 33 Strategies of War (2006), The 50th Law (2009, with rapper 50 Cent), Mastery (2012), The Laws of Human Nature (2018), and The Daily Laws (2021), a daily reader drawn from his work.
Major Works
His core books are The 48 Laws of Power (1998), The 33 Strategies of War (2006), Mastery (2012), The Laws of Human Nature (2018), and The Daily Laws (2021).
Writing Style and Themes
Greene writes dense, aphoristic books built on historical anecdotes — each law or principle illustrated by episodes from the lives of figures like Napoleon, Machiavelli, and Queen Elizabeth I. His recurring themes are the timeless patterns of power, strategy, and human psychology: how influence is won and lost, how mastery is built through apprenticeship, and how understanding others’ motives is the supreme social skill. His tone is unsentimental and pragmatic, treating history as a laboratory.
Legacy
Greene’s books have sold millions of copies worldwide and made him one of the most influential — and debated — voices in modern self-help and strategy literature. The 48 Laws of Power remains a staple in prisons, boardrooms, and music studios alike, and his work is widely cited by entrepreneurs, artists, and athletes.
