Richard Osman – Author Biography

Richard Osman is an English television presenter, producer, and bestselling novelist whose Thursday Murder Club series — cozy crime mysteries starring a group of crime-solving retirees — became a publishing phenomenon and one of the fastest-selling debut novel series in history.

Early Life

Richard Osman was born on November 28, 1970, in Billericay, Essex, England. He was educated at Warden Park School and studied politics and sociology at Trinity College, Cambridge. He has been open about living with nystagmus, a condition affecting his eyesight since birth. Before becoming famous on screen, he built a long career behind the camera in television production.

Career

Osman spent decades as a television producer and executive, becoming creative director at the production company Endemol UK, where he helped create hit formats. He became a household name as the co-host of the BBC quiz show Pointless (2009–2022) alongside Alexander Armstrong, winning a devoted following for his dry wit and formidable trivia knowledge. He later fronted Richard Osman’s House of Games and hosted the podcast The Rest Is Entertainment. In 2020 he published his first novel, The Thursday Murder Club, about four residents of a retirement village who meet weekly to investigate cold cases — and stumble into live ones. It became an instant bestseller and one of the bestselling crime debuts ever. He followed it with The Man Who Died Twice (2021), The Bullet That Missed (2022), The Last Devil to Die (2023), and The Impossible Fortune (2025). A Netflix film adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club, starring Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan, premiered in 2025. In 2024 he launched a second series with We Solve Murders, introducing a new crime-solving duo.

Major Works

His major works include the Thursday Murder Club novels — The Thursday Murder Club (2020), The Man Who Died Twice (2021), The Bullet That Missed (2022), The Last Devil to Die (2023), The Impossible Fortune (2025) — and the new series opener We Solve Murders (2024).

Writing Style and Themes

Osman’s novels are cozy crime at its warmest: witty, big-hearted mysteries that treat elderly protagonists as clever, funny, resourceful heroes rather than comic relief. His writing is light and dialogue-driven, full of affectionate humor, but it carries genuine emotional weight — exploring aging, grief, friendship, and the refusal to become invisible in later life. The mysteries themselves are classically constructed, with fair-play clues and satisfying twists, in the tradition of Agatha Christie updated for the modern era.

Legacy

Osman’s leap from television personality to bestselling novelist is one of publishing’s great recent success stories. His books have sold millions of copies worldwide and have been credited with revitalizing the cozy-crime genre and expanding the audience for crime fiction. He has shown that mysteries can be gentle without being slight — and that readers of all ages hunger for stories in which older characters get to be the heroes.
