Colleen Hoover – Author Biography
Early Life
Colleen Hoover was born on December 11, 1979, in Sulphur Springs, Texas, and grew up in the small town of Saltillo. She earned a degree in social work from Texas A&M University–Commerce and worked in social work and teaching before turning to writing. For years she wrote privately, and her entry into publishing was almost accidental: she self-published her first novel, Slammed, in 2012 simply so her mother — who used an e-reader — could read it.
Career
Slammed found an audience far beyond her mother. Readers discovered it on their own, reviews poured in, and the book climbed the bestseller lists, prompting Hoover to write a sequel and then more novels at a remarkable pace. She signed with Atria Books while continuing to self-publish, and throughout the 2010s she built one of the most loyal readerships in romance, with hits like Ugly Love (2014), November 9 (2015), and It Ends with Us (2016). In 2021, the BookTok community on TikTok discovered her backlist, and her sales exploded: multiple Hoover titles simultaneously occupied the New York Times bestseller list, an almost unprecedented feat. It Starts with Us (2022), the sequel to It Ends with Us, sold hundreds of thousands of copies in its first days. The film adaptation of It Ends with Us, starring Blake Lively, was released in 2024, followed by Regretting You in 2025. Alongside her writing, Hoover co-founded The Bookworm Box, a charity bookstore and subscription service benefiting various causes.
Major Works
Hoover has published more than twenty novels. Her most significant include Slammed (2012), Ugly Love (2014), November 9 (2015), It Ends with Us (2016), Verity (2021), Reminders of Him (2022), It Starts with Us (2022), and Regretting You (2019).
Writing Style and Themes
Hoover writes contemporary romance with an emphasis on emotional intensity. Her novels typically center on young women navigating love entangled with trauma, grief, domestic violence, or impossible choices, and she is known for plot twists that reframe everything the reader thought they knew. Her prose is direct and accessible, built for speed and feeling rather than ornament. Critics have debated her handling of heavy subjects, but her core theme is consistent: love as a force that both wounds and heals, and the difficult work of choosing oneself. Her books are engineered for the “one more chapter” effect, which helps explain their viral success.
Legacy
Colleen Hoover is the defining romance author of the BookTok era and one of the best-selling novelists of the 2020s, with tens of millions of copies sold worldwide. She demonstrated that a self-published author with a devoted readership could dominate traditional bestseller lists, and her success reshaped how publishers think about social-media-driven discovery. It Ends with Us also sparked wide public conversation about the portrayal of domestic violence in romance fiction.
