Brandon Sanderson – Author Biography

Brandon Sanderson is one of the most prolific and commercially successful fantasy novelists of the modern era, renowned for intricate magic systems, meticulously planned multi-volume sagas, and a remarkable writing pace. His works, many set in an interconnected fictional universe called the Cosmere, have sold tens of millions of copies and made him a central figure in twenty-first-century epic fantasy.

Early Life

Brandon Sanderson was born on December 19, 1975, in Lincoln, Nebraska. As a teenager he was initially a reluctant reader, but a teacher’s gift of Barbara Hambly’s Dragonsbane converted him into a devoted fantasy reader, and he soon began writing his own stories. He served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South Korea, an experience that broadened his cultural perspective and later informed his worldbuilding. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English, with an emphasis on creative writing, from Brigham Young University in Utah.

Career

After finishing his master’s degree, Sanderson spent years writing novels that failed to sell, completing around a dozen manuscripts before finding a publisher. His breakthrough came when his novel Elantris was accepted by Tor Books and published in 2005 to strong reviews. He followed it with the original Mistborn trilogy (2006–2008), which established his reputation for inventive magic systems. In 2007 he was chosen by the estate of the late Robert Jordan to complete the monumental Wheel of Time series, writing the final three volumes from Jordan’s notes: The Gathering Storm (2009), Towers of Midnight (2010), and A Memory of Light (2013). The final book brought the fourteen-volume saga to a close and was a major commercial success. Meanwhile, he launched his own projected ten-volume epic, the Stormlight Archive, with The Way of Kings (2010). He also taught creative writing at BYU and founded his own company, Dragonsteel Entertainment, to manage his expanding output.

Major Works

Sanderson’s major works include the original Mistborn trilogy (The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension, The Hero of Ages), the second-era Mistborn novels beginning with The Alloy of Law, the Stormlight Archive (The Way of Kings, Words of Radiance, Oathbringer, Rhythm of War, Wind and Truth), the standalone novels Elantris and Warbreaker, the young-adult Skyward science-fiction series, the Steelheart Reckoners trilogy, and the novella The Emperor’s Soul, which won the 2013 Hugo Award for Best Novella.

Writing Style and Themes

Sanderson is famous for “hard” magic systems — magic with clearly defined, internally consistent rules — and for codifying his approach in his three “Laws of Magic.” His prose is deliberately transparent and functional, prioritizing clarity and momentum over lyricism. His stories revolve around characters who struggle with purpose, faith, leadership, and moral compromise, and his endings are legendary for pulling together dozens of plot threads in long, cascading climaxes that fans call “Sanderlanches.” He also explores faith and doubt with unusual sincerity for the genre, reflecting his own religious background without writing explicitly religious fiction.

Legacy

Sanderson’s influence extends beyond his books. He has demystified the craft of fantasy through his university lectures and writing workshops, which circulate widely online. In 2022 he ran the most successful Kickstarter campaign of all time, raising over $41 million for four secret novels written during the pandemic, demonstrating an unprecedented direct relationship between an author and his readership. Film and television adaptations of his work remain in various stages of development. Through the interconnected Cosmere — a universe linking his major series through shared mythology and traveling characters — he has created one of the most ambitious narrative projects in fantasy literature.
